Pros and cons of Backplate and Wing

diving board

The scuba wing and backplate are separate components. The buoyancy compensator attaches both pieces to the buoyancy compensator. This creates positive buoyancy at the surface and neutral buoyancy under water. Backplate is modular and can be taken apart from the wing. These systems are an excellent choice for divers who aren’t sure what type to buy. Here are the pros and disadvantages of each.

Stainless steel

With or without a helmet, the stainless steel backplate and wings can be made from either stainless steel. The wings and backplate are made from 316 stainlesssteel. This material is highly resistant against saltwater. It is cut with a CNC machine and polished manually to avoid sharp edges that can prematurely wear the strap. They can also be used with a single-air-tank system or dual-air-tank systems. You can remove the stainless steel wings and backplate for easy storage.

Stainless steel backplates can be heavier than aluminum. Stainless steel backplates can be used in colder areas to reduce weight. Stainless steel backplates fit all types of dive tanks better than lead pieces. To help you determine the right weight for you, a Halcyon Dealer will provide weighting advice. You won't need to replace this backplate as often because it will last longer.

Plastic

The buoyancy of the plastic backplate and wing is not good, but it is still beneficial when replacing the weight on your weightbelt. Jacket BCDs come with pockets and weight integration. These ancillary options are not available on the backplate and wings. These components are available separately. The pros and cons of each will be discussed in this article. It is crucial that you choose the right type and size of back plate to suit your needs.

Softpack harness

There are several types of harnesses that can be used for the wings and backplate. Backplates, wing BCDs, and the most common are both available. They come with all the components needed, including a harness and backplate. Softpack BCDs make technical divers' lives easier. They are lightweight and flexible and do not attach to rigid plates.

The downside of steel backplate harnesses is their lack of adaptability. This harness is not suitable for single tanks. It is only compatible with double tanks with permanent bands. While the steel harness offers the most rigid option, it can be cumbersome when used for travel. This steel harness can only be used with double tanks. The steel backplate is also not recommended for use on the land. This can be modified to work with single tanks using adapters but it is not recommended.
